Best Review: 480GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 2.5-inch SATA 3 SSD - Breathing new life to an Old Mac or PC!i try to stay unbiased with apple products to the best of my ability. I think what i stumbled upon on this guide deserves a shot even by WinTel users as well.The situation:Old iMac 24'' 2008Internal 5.25 drives had died twiceRecovered system via SuperDuper backupsDied again recentlyThis time did not want to extend 2 days to install a new hard driveThe Opted solution: external SSD Drivewhich essentially replaces the need to boot from the iMac 24 native internal drives which are just going to die faster!(mind you that this drive here is an internal one what i have is not listed on amazon. The one i have is the OWC On-The-Go(tm) Pro120GB SSD Triple Interface Storage Solution -- [....] )Results after booting from the external drive:i did a a simple boot test (no sophisticated measuring tools or anything )Simple STOPWATCH start and finish :internal drive boot up time: 1m20sec.External SSD Via FW800: 45 seconds! (since this was an older iMac i really did not want to get inside it to replace the 5.25 to SSD)Conclusion:SSD Drives are fast! sorry i mean BLAZING fast! but you must decide on the uses for it. i for one can declare to anyonehaving an OLD PC OR MAC to opt for an SSD rather a newer machine.I typically use Office, Flash, Mail, Dropbox, Safari, OmniFocus, and OmniProject are the main application i am running in any one go.The loading and switching and reloading OR file movement is almost as good as "white bread!"As a result of this little experiment i ended up upgrading my 2 other home laptops to SSD as well.Apple MacBook Pro MD313LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION) 2010 MBP 13 - OWC 3G 480GB (my road warrior machine where i need the most speed)Apple MacBook Pro MD318LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)2011 MBO 15 - OWC 3G 240GB + OWC Data Doubler kit for Optical drive (this is my main desktop machine at home and is attached to storage)Why the different capacity of SSD?a. costb. The use and speed of usageSo the road wairoir is doing a load of photo importing and exporting and on the road needs faster processingAt home i just needed to make the OS boot faster and run apps faster but not really keen on actual storage. Plus i am reusing the current 550GB Momentous drive as complementary to the SSD.At home and on the road, majority of my work revolves around Music and Photography and this upgrade really is fantastic! the battery life even on the Laptops seems to last longer than before.Don't delay get an SSD TODAY! the best upgrade money you will ever spend!
