Best Review: APC RBC17 Replacement Battery Cartridge 17 - I've been using a UPS to protect my equipment for years, and I can't recommend this practice enough. It's rare we have surges and outages, but when we do, having this extra layer of protection has (I am sure) saved my machines on more than one occasion.The problem is that I hate fiddling with the batteries--the hassle of tracking them down online, price-shopping, and then shutting everything down and taking the thing apart. If there were a magical UPS battery with little robot feet that would come to my house and change itself, I'd definitely pay extra for it.So why this battery? Aggravated by the hassle of high battery prices, I made the mistake of going with a third-party vendor the last time around to save myself some money. They delievered me an official APC battery just fine, but it only lasted about a year.After doing some reading I discovered that lead-acid batteries are like food: they have a shelf life. If you don't use them (get them hooked up and running) within a certain amount of time after they are produced, the quality will slowly start to degrade. If you're buying straight from APC, it's a lot more likely the battery you'll be receiving will be new product.I've installed the APC-direct replacement. It arrived in fine shape, had even been charged before APC shipped it, and right now is humming away without complaint. According to a response I got from APC, the battery I ordered 1/13/2011 was manufactured at the end of September 2010.I like saving money...but I also like saving hassle.
